Wolves Earn First Victory In Split With Beavers

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Northern State University earned their first win of the 2009 season in the first game of their doubleheader with Bemidji State this evening, and concluded their trip to the Metrodome with a 1-1 split in their two games on Thursday.

Northern entered the top of the seventh inning sporting a three run lead, and after the lead runner was walked and picked off at first base the following play, relief pitcher Nick Wallentiny struck out the following batter for the first two outs of the inning.  The ensuing batter earned a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  The following batter was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.  The following batter reached on an error and the Beaver runners scored from second and first to bring the Wolves' lead down to one.  Wallentiny then closed out the game by getting the next batter he faced to ground out to end the game.

James Paul once again led the Wolves at the plate, going 2-2 with a walk and a sacrifice fly, including two walks, two RBI, and two runs scored.  Aaron Kappes went 2-4 with two singles and two RBI, and Mitch Locke went 2-3 with a double and three runs scored.

Freshman Michael Gardner earned his first win in a Wolves uniform by working through four and two thirds innings giving up five runs (two earned) on seven hits.  He also recorded three strikeouts and did not issue one walk.  Nick Wallentiny threw two and one third innings, giving up three runs (none earned) on one hit.  He also issued four walks and struck out two to help the Wolves to capture their first win of the 2009 season.

In the second game, Bemidji State was holding a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth when the Beavers exploded for four runs in their home half of the inning.  Northern was not able to score any more runs as the Beavers held on for a 7-2 victory. 

Lucas Jung went five and one third innings in taking the loss.  He allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits with two strike outs and two walks.  Jordan Zenk threw two thirds of an inning and allowed two earned runs on two hits with one walk and one strikeout. 

Dillon Talley led the Wolves at the plate with his 2-3 effort with a run scored, a double, and a triple.

The Wolves are now 1-3 on the year, and the Beavers are 1-1 to start their 2009 campaign.

Northern State University is an NCAA Division II affiliated school participating in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and is located in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
