Minneapolis, Minn
. – The Northern State University baseball team traveled to the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. on Wednesday to take part in a non-conference double-header against NSIC foe Concordia St. Paul.  The Golden Bears knocked in 23 runs through the two games in earning a sweep over Northern State.

Concordia jumps out to 2-0 on the season, and with the two losses, the Wolves begin 2009 with an 0-2 mark.

In the first game of the double-header, NSIC Preseason Pitcher of the Year Jake Schmidt threw a gem against the Wolves with a complete game shutout for a 4-0 victory for the Golden Bears.  Schmidt had 13 strikeouts compared to two hits in his seven innings of work.

The Wolves biggest threat to score came in the third inning when Schmidt walked the lead-off batter Nathan Zacher. Mitch Locke and James Paul each recorded consecutive singles to move Zacher over to third but he would be forced to stay there when Schmidt struck out the next batter with the bases loaded.  He would retire the following two batters with a pop-out to right field and a ground ball to end the inning.

Mitch Locke and James Paul led the Wolves at the plate, both going 1-2 with a single.

Concordia got on the board in the top of the first after Schmidt led off the game with a ground rule double shot to left field.  Brenden Furrow then moved his pitcher over to third with his single to the right side with two outs.  Concordia then attempted a double-steal, and allowed Schmidt to score from third before Furrow was tagged for the final out of the inning.

Brock Pashen took the loss on the hill for the Wolves, giving up four runs on five hits though five innings of work.  He issued three walks with no strikeouts.  He worked into a groove during the third and fourth innings throwing perfect ball through the two frames in holding down the potent Concordia offense.

The fifth would prove to be Pashen's last as he allowed three runs on two hits, with two walks and a wild pitch.

Nick Wallentiny came in for the sixth inning and finished the game for the Wolves in throwing two innings of shutout ball with three strikeouts.

The second game was not as close as the Golden Bears exploded for 19 runs en route to a 19-0 win in game two to complete the sweep of the Wolves.

Concordia pitcher Blake DeVries had five strikeouts in six scoreless innings in earning the win.

The Wolves were able to pound out eight hits during the second game, but were never able to get anyone around to score.  The Wolves left eight runners on base in the loss.

James Paul and Aaron Kappes both went 2-3 in leading the Wolves at the plate.

Chris Ahrenberg took the loss on the mound, giving up seven earned runs on nine hits in three innings of work.

The Wolves look to rebound tomorrow as they conclude their time in the dome with a double header against the Beavers of Bemidji State.
