LINCOLN, Neb. – In their final tune-up before heading to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference meet next weekend, the Northern State University Wolves sent a limited squad to the University of Nebraska Tune-Up on Friday hosted in UNL's Devaney Sports Center.
The Wolves came home with several solid performances, including an 11-second lifetime improvement from senior
Danny Scott in the men's 3,000 meters. Scott entered the weekend with an 8:55.29 seed time in that event, but clocked an 8:44.05 to finish fifth in a 30-man field on Friday. That time puts the senior third on the NSIC performance list for the season.
Freshman
Joey Heglund and junior
Bill Cameron also registered 50-second performances in the 400-meter dash, finishing 12th and 15th, respectively, in that event. Heglund clocked a time of 50.74, just off his season and personal best of 50.63 seconds, while Cameron finished in 50.87 seconds.
Heglund and Cameron also teamed with freshman
Matt Peterson and senior
Trevor Steen for a sixth place finish in the 4x400-meter relay. The four-some finished in 3:26.05, a 4-second improvement and a time that ranks fifth on the conference performance chart.
Senior
Ross Pfeifle and sophomore
Andrew Rose also had solid performances in the pole vault and high jump, respectively. Pfeifle finished ninth in a field of 21 after clearing 4.63 meters (15-02.25 feet) in the vault, while Rose was sixth in the high jump with a mark of 1.99 meters (6-06.25 feet).
On the women's side, junior
Amanda Madden and redshirt freshman
Melodi Boke notched solid performances in the women's shot put. Boke was tenth with a heave of 13.05 meters (42-09.75 feet), while Madden finished in 12th place with a mark of 12.91 meters (42.04.25 feet). Both marks were just short of personal bests for the pair.
Madden then went on to finish third in the weight throw behind a pair of Division I athletes. Her mark of 17.27 meters (56-03.75 feet) was less than five inches shy of the second place mark set by Lisa Minnick of UNL.
Freshman
Michelle Nickolas, in a somewhat unique event, turned in a time of 1:29.68 in the women's 600-yard run. That event is not contested at the Division II level, but is still a part of the Big 12 regimen.
The Wolves will be in full-swing action this weekend at the NSIC Indoor Championships, hosted by Bemidji State University on Saturday.
