MOORHEAD, MInn. –
Despite taking a limited squad, the Northern State University men's and women's track and field squads came away with five individual wins along with several PR's and a facility record on Saturday at the Concordia College Cobber Open.

The Wolves got individual wins from Michelle Nickolas in the 600 meters – good for her first collegiate win – and a pair of victories from junior Amanda Madden, who won both the shot put and weight throw in dramatic fashion.  Madden broke the CCM Olson Forum record in the preliminary round of the weight throw with a toss of 17.19 meters (56-4.75 feet).  She then bested that with a throw of 17.21 meters (56-5.75 feet) in the finals, winning that event by nearly eight feet.

Sophomore Kari Linneman also had a breakthrough race in the 5,000 meters, clocking a time of 19:06.66 to finish second in that events.  Sophomore Andrea Sjomeling also clocked a PR in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing third in 9.37 seconds.  Sjomeling also anchored NSU's 4x200-meter relay squad to a time of 1:50.49, good for third place.

On the men's side, redshirt freshman Cody Hunt remained unbeaten in the shot put, winning his third straight meet with a throw of 16.18 meters (53-1 feet).  That mark, Hunt's third straight NCAA provisional qualifying mark, is just shy of last week's personal best of 16.25 meters.

NSU's pole vaulters also scored a solid day as Ross Pfeifle and Wade Royer each cleared 4.57 meters (15-0) to finish fourth and fifth, respectively.

On the track, junior Josh Schmeichel clocked a personal best time of 9:02.04 in the 3,000 meters to win that event.  Schmeichel also ran the third leg of the men's third place 4x800-meter relay squad, which finished in 8:14.43.

NSU will host a small multi-event meet on Sunday and Monday.  Sunday's action begins at 2 p.m., while the final three events of the men's heptathlon will begin Monday morning at 10 a.m.  The Wolves will send their throwers and vaulters to the NDSU Bison Open on Friday, Feb. 6, while the bulk of the squad will travel to Vermillion, S.D. for the USD Hillenbrand Open on Friday and Saturday.
