ABERDEEN, S.D. – The bar has been raised, thanks to Northern State University senior
Ross Pfeifle and junior
Tanya Vassar. Both individuals set new school records in the pole vault on Saturday afternoon, clearing new heights and helping the Wolves to a pair of dual-meet wins over Jamestown College.
Pfeifle was one of two NSU athletes to post an NCAA provisional qualifying mark on the day, as he shattered his personal best by a foot, clearing 4.80 meters (15-9) to win that event by more than a foot. The NCAA provisional mark is 4.75 meters.
NSU also got a provisional qualifying effort from redshirt freshman
Cody Hunt, who won his second straight meet in the shot put. Hunt, who was victorious in his first ever collegiate competition last week, bested that mark today with a throw of 16.25 meters (53-3.75), winning by just over eight feet.
Vassar was a busy soul for the NSU women on Saturday, competing in four individual events and running a leg on the winning 4x400-meter relay. The sophomore mulit-eventer cleared 3.17 meters (10-4.75) in the pole vault before finishing second in the high jump, third in the long jump and fourth in the 55-meter hurdles and finishing off her day with the relay leg.
NSU sophomore
Andrew Rose just missed a qualifying height in the men's high jump. Rose cleared 2.00 meters (6-6.75) and had good attempts at 2.05 meters, but just missed on all three attempts at that mark. The NCAA provisional standard is 2.05 meters.
All told, the men won 10 of the 14 contested events on the day to claim a convincing 93-50 win over the Jimmies, while the women won six individual events along with the 4x400-meter relay to claim a 76-69 win.
NSU will be back in action next weekend, sending a partial squad to the Concordia College Open on Saturday, Jan. 31. The Wolves will also host the 2-day NSU Multi Events on Sunday and Monday, Feb. 1-2. Sunday's action will start at 2 p.m., while Monday's events are slated for a 10 a.m. start.
