FARGO, N.D. –
In his first ever collegiate meet, Northern State University redshirt freshman Cody Hunt began his career at the top, registering an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 53' ¼” in the shot put to win that event at the North Dakota State Bison Classic on Saturday.

Hunt was one of two NSU throwers to register a first place finish, as he was joined by junior Amanda Madden, who jumped two spots in the finals to win the women's weight throw with a mark of 57-5 ¾.  That mark was just shy of her previous best of 57-7 ½, set during the NSU Preseason Open in December.  Madden currently sits 5th on the NCAA Division II national performance list with that effort.

Madden and redshirt freshman Melodi Boke also placed well in the women's shot put, finishing sixth and fourth, respectively, in a Division I laden field.  Both had marks of more than 40 feet, while Boke finished just shy of the 41-foot mark at 40-11 ¾.

On the track, the NSU men placed three guys in the top five in the 60-meter hurdles.  Junior Bill Cameron led the way with a third place finish in 8.45 seconds, followed by senior Trevor Steen in fourth at 8.47 seconds and sophomore Arabin Lightfoot in fifth with a time of 8.57.

Competing for the first time this season, the NSU distance contingent got personal bests from redshirt freshman Kari Linneman and sophomore John Rawerts in the 3,000-meters.  Linneman finished fifth on the women's side in 11:23.66, while Rawerts was seventh in the men's race, clocking in at 9:18.09.  Senior Danny Scott was fourth in that race as well, in a time of 9:07.07.

The Wolves also got strong efforts from several freshman competitors on Saturday.  Matt Peterson registered a personal best in the 800, while running a leg on the fourth place mile relay squad.  Matt Kloss was consistent in the 60-meter dash, running a 7.16 in the preliminaries and a 7.17 in the finals, finishing fifth in that event.

Joey Heglund also performed well in the open 400 meters, while joining Peterson on the mile relay that finished fourth.

No team scores were kept at the Bison Classic, which featured strong competition from Division I NDSU and South Dakota State, along with a trio of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference squads.

NSU will be back on the track on Saturday taking on Jamestown College in a dual meet.
