SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Freshman
Kaylee McDonald gave the Northern State University Wolves a shot at winning two games in a row for the first time this season, but Augustana College's Katelyn Ley's first goal of the year cut those hopes short Sunday afternoon as the host Vikings squeaked out a 2-1 victory in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's soccer action.
Down 1-0 at halftime after Kate Timmons capitalized on one of AC's nine corner kicks late in the period, the Wolves pulled back even in the 57th minute on McDonald's fifth goal of the year. That goal, which came off a
Kirsten Saunders assist, gave the Wolves a chance to win two in a row for the first time all year.
Ley, however, had different ideas, as she sent home her first career goal in the 83rd minute to give the Vikings the 2-1 edge.
The Wolves managed just one shot after that goal, but missed wide, leaving the final score at 2-1.
With the loss, NSU falls to an even 5-5 on the year and 1-3 in NSIC action. Augustana improves to 6-2 overall after their weekend split. The Vikings are 4-1 in league play.
NSU sophomore
Maggie Fedor, who also picked up her fifth goal of the year in Saturday's 2-1 win over Wayne State, took a game-high four shots in Sunday's contest. Saunders, who now has two assists to her name this season, also took four shots, as the Wolves racked up a 16-10 advantage in that category.
The weekend contests concludes a 3-week stretch of road games for the Wolves, who return to campus to play their first home games in more than a month. NSU hosts Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday at noon before taking on Minnesota State on Sunday, beginning at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at Jerde Field.
