7th Inning Spark Can't Ignite Wolves In Game Two

, SD - The Northern State Wolves used a late 7th inning spark to get past the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State in game one, winning 1-0. However, they could not keep the bats of Southwest quiet and fell 10-8 in game two. The Wolves are now 9-25 overall, and 7-19 play. The Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State are now 18-16 overall and 8-10 in the NSIC.

In the first game of the Wolves double-header, both teams were held scoreless for six Innings. The pitching duel would come down to the bottom of the 7th inning for their to be a single run in the game.

 

Defensively the Wolves put on a good show and held the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State scoreless. The gloves of NSU has 21 put outs and 12 assists on the game. Matt Tales had a game high 10 putouts.

 

It all came down to the last inning of play, and with the top of the order up to bat, the Wolves got two quick outs and then Adam Kampsen was hit by the pitch to get on base. Tales would nail one up the middle and with Coach Gulseth giving Kampsen the go ahead, he slid into home for the winning run. Tales got the only hit of the game, and the only RBI, for the win.

 

Lucas Jung gets the win pitching a near perfect game. He improves his record to 3-1, only giving up 2 hits in 7 innings of action.

Unlike the first game the Wolves came out in the second game with heavy bats. Tom Keiser was the first to start in on the action with a triple to bring teammates Tales and Kampsen home. Then, with two on catcher Andy Berkler stepped up and hit one out of the park, his third on the year. The Wolves would end the inning with an early 5-1 lead. 

The Mustangs would take their first lead of this two games series against the Wolves in the bottom of the 3rd on a passed ball to take a 6-5 lead. The Wolves would battle and with 4 different pitches in 4 innings would still lead 8-7 in the fifth inning. 

The Wolves would fall behind 10-8 in the bottom of the fifth inning, and go into the final inning still down two. With Brock Pashen on the mound in the top of the inning the Mustangs had their last chance to add more damage to the score. The Wolves stepped up their defense and got three quick outs. However, the Wolves were not able to rally and lost 10-8. 

Berkler went 2 for 4 at the plate with two homerun's and 5 RBI's. Tales and Keiser both went 1 for 3 at the plate with 2 runs. 

Pashen gets the loss for the Wolves and falls to 1-7 on the year.
