Wolves Battle, Split With Beavers

GAME ONE BOX

, SD - The Northern State Wolves used pitching and good defense to split with the Beavers Sunday afternoon at Fossum Field. The Wolves fell behind early in game one and lost 5-1 to the Beavers. However, they kept battling and in game two rallied in the third inning to get their first win over the Bemidji State Beavers, 4-2. The Northern State Wolves are now 8-24 overall and 6-18 in the NSIC. The Beavers of Bemidji State go 3-1 on the weekend and improve to 12-17-1 and 10-6 in the NSIC.

In game one the Wolves fell behind 3-0 in the first inning of play. They would go on to
hold the Beavers scoreless in 4 out of the 7 innings but couldn't put enough points on the board to surpass the Beavers. They fell 5-1 and only had 4 hits and 1 run to finish up their third game against the Beavers. 

 Andrew Lunsetter was 1 for 3 at the plate, getting the Wolves only run of the game, which came in the 6th inning.  Designated hitter Matt Tales would go 0 for 3 at the plate but get the Wolves solo RBI of the game to bring in teammate Lunsetter.

Nathan Zacher pitched a complete game for the Wolves, picking up the loss to fall 1-5 on the season.

GAME TWO BOX
  

In Game Two the Wolves gave up another early lead falling behind 2-0 in the first inning. They started some action in the second when Scott Iano hit a nice ball to the right field, despite the wind, and got on base with a double but the Wolves were not able to capitalize. 

The Wolves came out in the third very aggressive. Lunsetter would start the action with a single to left field, followed by a Kampsen hard single to short stop to leave two on base. Tom Keiser stepped up and had a nice bunt down the left side line and with an error by BSU brought Lunsetter in for the first run of the game for the Wolves. They would keep the bats swinging and finish the inning with three more runs and take their first lead over the Bemidji Beavers in two days, 4-2.

 The Wolves held the Beavers scoreless 5 out of the 6 innings they were up to the plate, to get the win 4-2. Defensively the Wolves had 21 put-outs to the Beavers 18 and had a game high 8 strike outs.

                                                
Kampsen went 2 of 3 at the plate and had one RBI. Defensively Kampsen had a big game for the Wolves. He made three impressive snags at shortstop to finish the game with 3 assists. Designated hitter Matt Tales went two for three at the plate, with one RBI.

Derek Hoellein in his first career start for the Wolves went 6 innings with an impressive 7 strikeouts and only 2 runs.  Hoellein gets the win for the Wolves and now improves his record to 1-0 on the season.

 

Bauman earned the save for the Wolves pitching in the last inning of play to secure the win.

The Wolves are back in action this Wednesday in a double header against Southwest Minnesota State at Fossum Field. The first pitch will be thrown at 1:30pm
