U-Mary Sweeps Wolves

, Minn. – The University of Mary (5-12, 4-0 NSIC) completed a season sweep of Northern State's baseball team, taking two more wins on Friday morning at the 2008 NSIC Metrodome Classic. The Wolves are 2-8 on the year and 0-4 in NSIC play. They face UM-Morris on Tuesday, March 25 on the road.
 
GAME 1
Both the Wolves and Marauders posted big innings in game 1, the University of Mary opening the game with five runs from six hits in the first. The Wolves struck back in the bottom of the inning with two runs from three hits, but their big inning came in the third as the team rallied from a 9-2 deficit. 
 
The Wolves batted around the order, gaining their first baserunners from walks and a hit batsman. Then the hits started to come, beginning with a two-RBI single from Carlos CamachoMatt Geisslerfollowed with an RBI single to left center field and Adam Kampsen drove in a run with a double down the left field line. Austin Simons knocked in two more with a single up the middle to get the Wolves back to within a run, 9-8.
 
The Marauders had another huge inning in the fourth to put the game out of reach, scoring seven of 11 batters reaching the plate. They had four hits and were helped with three walks and a hit batsman to go up 16-8. They finished with a 20-8 win after peppering 16 hits in the game.
 
Simons led the Wolves with two of the team's eight hits, driving in a set of runs. Camacho also had two RBIs. Tyler Bauman (0-1) took the loss after 2.2 innings of work, giving up eight hits and eight earned runs. Bauman and Jon Bitz each tallied four strikeouts.
 
U-Mary's Peterson went 2-for-3 at the plate with five RBIs. Teammates Feldman and Liffrig each added three RBIs. Massinburge (1-0) gained the win after 4.1 innings of relief, marking the team's only two strikeouts. Culliton made the start and pitched 2.2 innings.
 
GAME 2
Game 2 was a closer battle through the early innings. The Marauders struck first with a run in the second and a two-run dinger in the third. The Wolves stayed close with two runs in the third as well. Andrew Lunsetter started the inning with a double and scored from an Aaron Kappes single. Kappes later came around to score on an Adam Kampsen three-bagger, making the score 3-2 in favor of UM after three.
 
Each team pegged a run in the fourth and the Marauders went further up with two runs in the fifth. The Wolves defended the field well in the sixth, picking off two runners and keeping U-Mary without a score. Nick Wallentiny struck out the side in the seventh and gave the Wolves a chance for a comeback in the bottom of the inning. 
 
Payton McCleary reached base on a fielders choice and rounded third to score after Kampsen hit a dinger off the baggie for a double. Kampsen then crossed the plate on a Simons double down the left field line to set the score at 6-5 with a runner in scoring position. The Wolves came up just short of tying the game, leaving Simons on base and giving the Marauders the series sweep.
 
Kampsen batted 2-for-4 with two RBI in the game. Three other NSU players notched two hits in the game as the Wolves out-hit the University of Mary 9-6. Matt Geissler pitched five innings with six strikeouts, giving up all six runs.
