Wolves to Host "Spiking for a Cure"

10/7/2008 10:04:36 AM

ABERDEEN, S.D. - The Northern State University volleyball team will take the court Wednesday, Oct. 8, to face the University of Mary in an important Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match.
But it's the battle off the court that the Wolves are drawing attention to.  The Wolves have designated the match as their Cancer Awareness match, a joint venture between the Mauraders and the Wolves.  Mary hosted a similar event last year, and the two teams will alternate years.
The Wolves will be honoring faculty and staff members, including men's basketball coach Don Meyer and former track and field standout Chang Beachem, that have been stricken with cancer in a series of interactive pre-match events.
The Wolves will also be collecting donations that will go to support NSU's on-campus Relay for Life team, Saving Second Base.  All donations, including those from other NSU athletic teams, will go to support the team, ensuring that the money raised will stay more local.
Other information about the event is listed below.
    • Anyone wearing pink to the match will receive free admission.
    • The team will have t-shirts for sale at the gate.  A t-shirt purchase will allow free admission.
    •  Northern State and Mary will both be wearing pink warm-up t-shirts that were donated by U.S. Bank.
    • All proceeds from the sale of pink lemonade at the concession stand will be donated.
    • E-Z Stop Food Marts will donate $1 for each fan that attends the match.  Budget Blinds is also making a contribution.
    • Saving Second Base will also have t-shirts and bracelets at a booth inside Wachs Arena.  Each cancer color will be represented.
    • Prior to the start of the match, there will be a mini "Relay for Life," featuring an individual touched by cancer walking with a member from each Wolves athletic squad walking around the court and passing off a baton in relay style.
    • NSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) representatives are collecting donations from team members to contribute.
    • While all cancer survivors will be honored and remembering, pink (the color for breast cancer) will be the theme color for the match.
