NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS

COUNCIL ON COMMUNITY, CULTURE, AND SOCIAL JUSTICE

Northern State Athletics created the Athletics Council on Community, Culture and Social Justice as a department-wide effort to help advance the University's commitment to anti-racism, social justice and equality. We are committed to fostering change at Northern State University. Please visit our feedback form HERE to share your thoughts and ideas with us.

MISSION

Northern State Athletics unites with its student-athletes, coaches, staff, and faculty of diverse backgrounds, experiences, and contributions. We value the uniqueness represented by the Northern community. We view differences as opportunities for growth. We are committed to upholding the values of equity and justice by creating and sustaining an anti-racist environment in athletics and in our broader communities, and fostering an inclusive culture for all individuals across dimensions of diversity.

As a department, we will lead the way as advocates for diversity and inclusion:

VALUE (differences)
EMBRACE (uniqueness)
ADVOCATE (inclusion)

GOALS

  • Foster an inclusive culture for all individuals across dimensions of diversity, including but not limited to age, race, gender, national origin, religion, and sexual orientation;
  • Educate and train Northern student-athletes and athletics department staff on the topics of diversity, inclusion, and cultural intelligence;
  • Increase the recruitment and retention of minority and underrepresented student-athletes and athletics department staff at Northern;
  • Serve as a liaison to campus diversity and inclusion offices, organizations, and professionals; and
  • Enforce the institution’s commitment to the NCAA Presidential Pledge to Promote Diversity & Gender Equity in Intercollegiate Athletics

This council will work in concert with both the University’s and Athletics Mission, Vision and Values and the University’s Strategic Action Plan
