RE-ENGAGEMENT OF NSU STUDENT-ATHLETES
NSU Athletic Administration and Sanford Health Aberdeen developed the following guidelines based upon best practices from National, State, Local, and University authorities - using information collected as of
June 19, 2020. This is a very fluid situation and procedures and requirements may change rapidly. NSU Athletic Training/Sanford Health have outlined best practices and considerations to implement in order to provide the best outcome for the re-engagement of student-athletes into physical activity on campus. Our primary focus is on the safety and well-being of NSU student-athletes and the safety of our entire campus community. The
South Dakota Board of Regents has adopted a Face Covering Protocol mandating the use of masks at Northern State University and the other five public universities. The protocol, which applies to all students, staff, faculty and campus visitors, requires individuals to wear masks in all public indoor spaces on campus beginning July 28, 2020.

VOLUNTARY WORKOUT PROTOCOL BY SPORT
Please click on each sport listed below for full information on the specific protocols that are in place on a sport-by-sport basis. For all voluntary workouts conducted with NSU coaches, there will be at least 1 coach that is CPR/AED certified at the facility during all voluntary workout times.
Student-athletes will be required to wear masks/face coverings during all indoor workout sessions. In addition, it is highly recommended that student-athletes wear masks/face coverings during outdoor workouts. All coaches will be required to wear a mask/face covering at all indoor and outdoor workout sessioms.
If it is not possible to clean equipment after every athlete contact, each athlete will be asked use hand sanitizer/wash their hands between each drill. For all ball sports, the ball itself will be cleaned during the workout – before, during and after, preferably every 10-15 minutes or after times of significant contact with bodily fluids (e.g., if the ball is touched by someone’s sweaty body, sneezes, etc.).

NORTHERN STATE SUMMER CAMPS
Below is information regarding summer camps at Northern State University in July and August of 2020. Camps will be offered in the following sports: football, soccer, m/w basketball, volleyball, and swimming. Each camp will follow the guiding principles from the CDC regarding youth summer camps. For a full list of summer camp offerings
CLICK HERE. NSU summer camps are permissible per NCAA effective June 1, 2020. Northern State will use a "tee-time” approach for each camp. Identify periods of time and incorporate transition times between sessions.
Sanford Health has recommended that each participant be screened daily upon arrival to the respective facility. Screening will be done by infrared thermometer by coaching staff members. Campers will be asked the following 2 questions upon registration: Have you been diagnosed with COVID-19, and have you been in close contact with anyone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19? All camp materials will encourage campers, staff, campers, and their families about when they should
stay home and when they can return to camp. Each registration form will include the following language:
- IF you are sick or have recently had a close contact with a person with COVID-19 please stay home.
- Staff members, campers and their families will be required to stay home if they have tested positive for or are showing COVID-19 symptoms.
If a camper answers yes to the questions above and/or fails the temperature screen, they will be asked to leave and will not be allowed to participate in camp. The camper will be provided with a refund, prorated based upon number of days/sessions participated. All parents/guardians will be required to sign a waiver prior to the start of camp acknowledging risk of COVID-19 in any public place and agree to not hold NSU/SDBOR/State of South Dakota liable for any illness or injury.
Masks/Face Coverings
- All camp staff will be required to wear a mask at all times. Cloth face coverings are meant to protect other people in case the wearer is unknowingly infected but does not have symptoms. Parents should wear masks at any time they are in the respective facility, this will ensure for a safe environment and to ensure a smooth drop-off and pick-up process.
- The South Dakota Board of Regents has adopted a Face Covering Protocol mandating the use of masks at Northern State University and the other five public universities. The protocol, which applies to all students, staff, faculty and campus visitors, requires individuals to wear masks in all public indoor spaces on campus beginning July 28, 2020.
Signs and Messages
- NSU will posts signs in visible areas at all camp entrances and high-use areas that promote everyday protective measures and describe how to stop the spread of germs such as by properly washing hands and properly wearing a cloth face covering.
- NSU will include messages about behaviors that prevent spread of COVID-19 when communicating with staff and families (such as on camp websites, in emails, and through camp social media account).
Parents/Guardians During Camps
- It is not recommended that parents stay in the facility during camp. After the parent/guardian drops off and assists with child check-in, parents should leave the facility.
- IF the parent or guardian feels that they must be present in the facility for the duration of the camp, they will be required to wear a mask at all times and practice social distancing at the facility per the Face Covering Protocol outlined above.
