NORTHERN STATE STORYLINES

  • The Wolves head into the season picked eighth overall and fourth in the North Division by the NSIC coaches
  • NSU went 6-5 overall last season, winning six of their last seven contests
  • Daniel Britt and Jake Adams were selected as the team's players to watch for the upcoming season, with Adams named the NSIC North Division Preseason Player of the Year
  • Schmidt signed over 40 student-athletes in the spring and brought in a well experienced group of transfers that was noted as the top transfer class in the state by Sideline Sports Nation
  • In addition to his league accolades, Adams earned a spot on the D2Football.com Elite 100 Watch List
  • The now junior, recorded a quartet of All-American honors last season finishing the year with a record breaking 147 tackles which ranked second in the nation at the Division II level
  • Britt came on strong for the Wolves in the final seven contests, leading the team with a 62.0 pass completion percentage, 1,163 yards passing, and 474 yards rushing
  • Northern returns a multitude of their statistical leaders from last season including Hank Kraft (620 yards rushing), Adams (147 tackles), Max Van Landingham (6.0 sacks), Kegan Mountain (5 interceptions), and Jeremy Caruso (6-of-10 field goals made)
  • Mike Schmidt enters his sixth season at the helm for the Wolves, holding a Northern State record of 24-20
 

SIOUX FALLS STORYLINES

  • Sioux Falls opened their 2025 campaign last week at Black Hills State, recording a 27-21 victory
  • Heading into the season, USF was picked fifth overall and third in the South Division by the league's coaches
  • The Cougars went 8-3 a season ago with head coach Jim Glogowski entering his third season at the helm
  • Sioux Falls returns their starting quarterback in Camden Dean who lead the team with 2,194 yards passing and 23 touchdowns last season; he also rushed for 671 yards
  • On the defense, USF returns NSIC Newcomer of the Year Andy Henson at linebacker who tallied 46 tackles in his first season with the Coo
  • In the opener against BHSU, Dean scored on a pair of rushing touchdowns and connected with Isaiah Emanuel for a third
  • The Cougars led the contest with 26 first downs, 205 yards rushing and 243 yards passing, while the defense grabbed an interception by Mauloa Wells and held Black Hills to just 64 yards rushing
 

THE WOLVES AND COUGARS HISTORY

  • The Wolves hosted the Cougars in 2024, marking the first meeting between the teams since 2021
  • Sioux Falls came away with a 34-10 victory
  • Northern is 11-7 all-time against Sioux Falls and 1-1 in the Schmidt-era
