Aberdeen, S.D. – Members of the Northern State community, along with NSU Athletics and the Northern State University Foundation are coming together to remember former student-athlete and longtime coach Maia Tupou with the "Doin it Movin" Memorial Scholarship Fund.
"I never had the opportunity to meet Maia in person, however his love for Northern State and impact on this community is undeniable," noted Nate Davis, Director of Athletics. "A supporter of Northern State student-athletes for two decades, Coach Tupou's legacy will carry on for years to come."
Known for his welcoming demeanor and loving heart, Tupou touched the lives of those around him, involved with the football program, the university as a whole, and the greater Aberdeen community. He was deemed the "Godfather of Northern State football" becoming a mainstay on the Wolves sidelines from 2004-2021.
"Maia Tupou's enduring legacy at Northern State is one of unwavering pride and loyalty, deeply rooted in his love for Northern State football and all those who were part of the program, both past and present," explained Mike Schmidt, Head Football Coach. "For over two decades, Maia touched the lives of everyone involved with NSU football, leaving a lasting positive impact. To honor his memory, this scholarship has been established in his name, ensuring that his spirit of dedication and affection for Northern, Wolves Athletics, and the community of Aberdeen will continue to inspire our football program for years to come."
Tupou began his coaching career with the Wolves as a student-assistant in 2004, following his playing career with Ken Heupel's Wolves squads in 2002 and 2003. He coached a number of position groups in his time with Northern State football including the defensive line, wide receivers, linebackers, and running backs. The California native played linebacker for the Wolves, racking up 108 tackles in 21 career games.
"So many alumni and friends have reached out to our office and on social media sharing stories of Maia, and really kick started this charge," explained Zach Flakus, President and CEO of the NSU Foundation. "Because of the impact he had on our Northern State community far and wide, people are finding a multitude of ways to honor him. It is a testament to how much he was a loved and respected member of the Wolves family."
