Northern State Baseball Splits the Day Against Winona State

Sioux Falls, S.D. – Timely hits led the Northern State University baseball team to take down Winona State, 11-2 in game one but fell short in game two 9-7. The Wolves tallied 20 runs off of 21 hits while notching ten extra-base hits on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 1
  • Winona State kicked off the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first to put them ahead
  • After a scoreless second inning, Nick Friedges knocked one down the right field line for a double that scored Brennan Phillips and Jackson Meyers to take the lead
  • On a fielder's choice groundout by Karson Hesser scored Friedges to put Northern State up by two runs to close out the top of the third
  • The Warriors chipped away from the deficit in the bottom of the third inning with one run
  • Jordan DeMarce reached first on an error that scored Meyers in the fourth inning; Phillips doubled to left center to score DeMarce
  • Jonah Schmidt kept the Wolves rolling in the fourth after a single that scored Hesser; Xander Paar singled to score Weidner
  • Andrew Wedwick reached first on an error that scored Weidner; on a bases loaded walk by DeMarce scored Parr to close out the top of the fourth to lead by eight runs
  • After a few scoreless innings, Hesser flied out to center field to score Phillips in the top of the seventh inning
  • The Wolves recorded 11 runs off of nine hit, two stolen bases, and no errors in the game

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 2
  • Northern State was first to score in the second game as Wedwick drove one to right center for a triple that scored Jonah Schmidt in the top of the second
  • Winona State responded back with one run to tie the game in the bottom of the second inning
  • Karson Hesser gave the Wolves the lead with a single to center field that scored Brennan Phillips; Schmidt added one more run for NSU with a single that scored Hesser
  • After two scoreless innings, Schmidt knocked a single that scored Hesser; Michael Benevides found a hole and scored Schmidt and Jack Weidner to lead by five runs
  • The Warriors chipped away from the deficit with a homerun in the bottom of the fifth
  • Hesser drove one over the right field fence for his second homerun of the season
  • Winona State added four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning
  • WSU took the lead in the bottom of the eight with two homes that gave them the lead by two
  • The Wolves tallied seven runs off of 12 hits and two stolen bases
  • Tyler Boyum recorded the loss in 1.2 innings with three strikeouts against 11 batters
