Steven McKee Promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for External Operations

3/28/2022 11:00:00 AM

Aberdeen, S.D. – Northern State University Interim Director of Athletics, Terri Holmes announced today the promotion of Steven McKee to the position of Assistant Athletic Director for External Operations. McKee moves into the role with the departure of Austin Hieb, which was announced earlier this month.

"We are excited to move Steven into this new role within our department," explained Holmes. "Steven has proven himself, both as a graduate assistant and as the Coordinator of Marketing and Events. I know he will continue to do great work for our department and our student-athletes."

"I am truly honored and humbled for this new opportunity," noted McKee. "I would like to thank Terri Holmes for having the confidence in me for this role. This is a very exciting time for Wolves Athletics and I cannot wait to work more closely with the Aberdeen community, who have been a driving force behind the success of our department."

Since June of 2021, McKee held the title of Coordinator of Marketing and Events. He was the liaison for game operations for the department and assisted with various athletics related special events. In addition, he fulfilled marketing and sponsorship agreements, assisted with various sponsorship sales, ticket sales and customer service initiatives, and worked to increase student and overall fan attendance at Wolves events. McKee will remain as the tournament director for the Wolves on the Water fishing tournament.

From 2018-21 he served as the Intramurals and Recreation and Athletic Operations Graduate Assistant at Northern State. In his graduate assistant roles, McKee oversaw 16 intramural programs, which served over 400 students, managed the Northern State Nike Team Store, promoted NSU athletics and athletic fundraising events including the NSU Golf Classic and the Wolves on the Water tournament, and assisted in the direction of the Wolves Buddies and Howling Wolves programs.

McKee kicked off his athletics career as a game day and event worker at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls. He worked directly with spectators in the facility, providing a safe environment for both spectators and participants.

McKee is a 2018 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls, earning bachelor's degrees in Business Administration and Sports Management. The Yankton native played four seasons for the Cougar football team, appearing in 23 total games. McKee concluded his USF career with 71 tackles and 11.5 sacks. He also received his master's in Sport Performance and Leadership from Northern State in May of 2021.
