Wolves Split NSIC Opener with Golden Bears

Minnetonka, Minn. – The Northern State baseball team earned a split in their mid-week doubleheader with Concordia-St. Paul. The Golden Bears earned a 4-1 victory in game one, but the Wolves battled back to win the second game 4-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • Northern State scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning, when Reece Ragatz hit an RBI single up the middle to score Jack Paulson from second base
  • Concordia-St. Paul put up two runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning; Brayden Roybal scored on a wild pitch while the bases were loaded, and Jarod Wandersee grounded out to score Nick Thimsem from third base
  • The Golden Bears tacked on another run in the second inning as Jaden Werner singled down the right field line to score Mason Wolf
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, CSP's Mason Nadolney grounded out to the shortstop but was able to score Wandersee from third base to make the score 4-1
  • The Wolves offense threatened in the top of the sixth with a bases loaded situation; however, they were unable to push a run across the plate
  • Northern scored their one run on four hits, and did not commit an error defensively
  • Seth Brewer suffered the loss on the mound for NSU, while getting the start he threw five complete innings and allowed four earned runs off five hits and three walks; Brewer threw two scoreless innings and notched two strikeouts
  • Mike Stubbs entered in relief in the sixth inning, he threw one complete inning and recorded one strikeout while facing three batters

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • Once again Northern State struck first in the top of the first inning, Ramon Vega Jr. singled and a throwing error by the third baseman allowed for him to advance to second while Karson Hesser scored from second base
  • The Wolves added a second run later in the inning when Brandon Kusler was walked with the bases loaded, scoring Vega Jr. from third base
  • Mateo Tahsini hit an RBI single through the right side of the infield to score Reece Ragatz from third base and push the lead to 3-0 after only half an inning of play
  • Concordia-St. Paul scored two runs on consecutive at-bats in the bottom of the second inning; Mason Nadolney hit an RBI single into left field to score Jarod Wandersee and Justin McGuigan hit an RBI single to center field to score Jaden Werner
  • Austin Portner snagged a line ball by Jack Young and got the throw to Alex Gauer at first base in time to complete the double play and end the second inning before the Golden Bears could score any more runs
  • The Wolves offense got going again in the fifth inning when Gauer singled to right field and scored Tahsini to push the lead to 4-2
  • Northern scored their four runs on eight hits, and committed one error defensively
  • Max Otto secured his fourth win of the season while throwing a complete game on the mound, he also recorded a new career high with ten strikeouts in the game

Northern State will continue their stretch of road games this weekend when they travel to face Upper Iowa. The 3-game series has been pushed back one day from the originally scheduled dates, and games are now set for Sunday and Monday (March 27th and 28th).
