Northern State Closed out Opening Weekend with Two Wins

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University softball team cruised to a 4-0 record on Saturday with wins over Valley City and the College of Saint Mary. The Wolves combined for 12 runs and 26 hits in the two games, without giving up an error.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • Northern recorded nine runs on 16 hits, scoring two runs in the third, three in the fourth, two in the sixth, and two in the seventh
  • Alexandria Arndt plated the first run of the game for either team, scoring Ashley Fauske on a single to left in the top of the third
  • Claire Zbylut also came around to score in the third on an error by the Vikings second baseman
  • Shelby Novotny and Jessi Hernandez scored for the Wolves in the fourth, on a singles by Hernandez and Liv Richardson
  • Elly Smith tallied a single to right in the sixth, scoring Richardson and Zyblut
  • Hannah Smith and Ashley Fauske recorded the final two runs of the game for NSU in the seventh on singles from Hernandez and Arndt
  • Reagan Elrod threw her second win of the season, giving up one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • The Wolves tallied their three runs on ten hits without giving up an error
  • Zyblut kicked off the scoring for NSU with a line drive homerun to center in the bottom of the third
  • Arndt came around to score two at-bats later on a single to left center by Elly Smith, giving NSU the 2-0 lead
  • Zbylut then plated the final and what would be the decisive run of the game for Northern on a single to left in the bottom of the fourth
  • The Flames battled back in the sixth, notching two runs of their own, however were unable to tie the game or take the lead
  • Meghan Anderson started in the circle for NSU, tossing her second win of the season
  • Anderson gave up two earned runs on four hits with 15 strikeouts; tying the single game school record for the second time
