Northern State Scores 15 Runs in Wednesday Split with Minnesota Duluth

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University baseball team closed out their 15-game home stand this afternoon taking one game versus Minnesota Duluth. The Wolves recorded a 5-run victory in game one, but ultimately fell in the top of the ninth in game two after a valiant comeback.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Spencer Sarringar led off the scoring for the Wolves, blasting a homerun to left center in his first appearance of the game
  • The Bulldogs quickly answered back, tying the game at one in the top of the second
  • Northern took the lead in the bottom of the third and did not look back, on a 3-run shot by Karson Hesser to right
  • The Wolves added a pair of runs in the fifth on a Bulldog wild pitch, scoring Niko Pezonella, and sacrifice fly by Jack Paulson, scoring Hesser
  • Austin Portner tallied the final run of the game for the Wolves in the sixth on a bases loaded walk by Pezonella
  • NSU recorded their seven runs in the game on nine hits and did not give up an error defensively
  • Brian Baker toss his first win of the 2021 season, striking out six in four innings of work
  • Zach Hartford and Zach Hrvol threw a combined three scoreless innings of relief for the Wolves, notching two strikeouts apiece

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Duluth struck first in game two, notching two runs in the top of the second
  • Northern answered back in the bottom of the frame, tying the game with runs from Karson Hesser and Jack Paulson
  • The knotted up game did not last long, as the Bulldogs took a 2-run lead in the third and tacked one three runs in the fifth and one in the seventh
  • The Wolves put together a solid eighth inning, tying the game once again with six total runs
  • Scoring for NSU in the sixth was Bryce Krattiger, Hesser, Ben Carolin, Kai Brisk, Isaiah Chevalier, and Brandon Kusler
  • UMD regained the lead in the top of the ninth and the Wolves were unable to tie or take the lead in the final half inning of regulation
  • Northern recorded their eight runs on 11 hits, giving up two errors defensively
  • Connor Burgess suffered the loss for the Wolves, giving up the one run in the top of the ninth
