Northern State Rallies Back Taking one from Southwest Minnesota State

Aberdeen, S.D. – On a windy day from Moccasin Creek Softball Complex, the Northern State University softball team spilt with Southwest Minnesota State. The Mustangs tallied a comeback victory in game one, however the Wolves rallied and secured their 20th win of the season in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Southwest Minnesota State struck early, notching two runs in their first at-bats of game one
  • Makenzie Merritt answered back in the bottom of the frame, scoring Elly Smith on a double to left center
  • The Wolves then grabbed the lead in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Smith scoring Emma Terveer and an unearned run by Rachel Reinke
  • Shelby Novotny gave the Wolves a 4-2 lead in the fourth, scoring on Emily Charchuk's single to right
  • The Mustangs put together a crushing fifth inning, scoring six runs on five hits with three Northern State errors for the 8-4 lead
  • NSU plated two in the bottom of the frame on a double to left by Elyse Cuttic and bases loaded walk by Charchuk
  • SMSU was not finished, adding two more runs in the top of the sixth inning
  • The Wolves scored their final run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth on an infield single by Chanel Siebenthal
  • Northern recorded seven runs on 13 hits and gave up five errors defensively
  • Meghan Anderson suffered her sixth loss of the season in 4.0 innings of work

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams were scoreless through 2.5 innings of play and Makenzie Merritt put the Wolves on the board with a 2-run single up the middle in the bottom of the third
  • Elyse Cuttic singled to right in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Jessi Hernandez to give Northern a 3-0 lead
  • Southwest tallied their first run of the game in the top of the sixth, however the Wolves answered with three more in the bottom of the frame
  • Emma Terveer, Ashley Fauske, and Alexandria Arndt all singled in the sixth, scoring Chanel Siebenthal, Terveer, and Rachel Reinke
  • The Mustangs fought back in the top of the seventh, notching three runs off the Northern State starter, but the Wolves were able to close out the contest leaving one stranded
  • Elyse Cuttic tallied her tenth win of the season and the Northern State offense recorded six runs on 12 hits
