Wolves Softball Produces an Offensive Assault from Joplin

Joplin, Mo. – The long ball, enough said. The Northern State University softball team swept Missouri S&T on Friday afternoon from the TMZ Tournament. The Wolves combined for six homeruns between the contests, including five in the opening 15-0 run-rule victory. NSU recorded 18 runs and 19 hits in the two games from Joplin.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Wolves tallied 15 runs on 12 hits in the game one victory, notching three runs in the first, eight in the second, one in the third, and three in the fourth
  • Elyse Cuttic put the Wolves on the board in the bottom of the first, plating Kennady Thompson (hit-by-pitch) and Chanel Siebenthal (double to center) on a homerun
  • Northern had an explosive second inning, notching eight runs on five hits
  • Scoring in the second were Shelby Novotny (walk), Rachel Reinke (walk), Siebenthal (error by the catcher), Thompson (single), Cuttic (single), Makenzie Merritt (grand slam), Katie Palmer (walk), and Emily Charchuk (homerun)
  • Thompson added to her Northern State school record, belting a home run to left in the third, which was also the 200th hit of her career making her the Northern State record holder
  • Claire Zyblut recorded her first career homerun in the bottom of the fourth on a long ball to center
  • Cuttic notched two more RBI following the Zyblut long ball, scoring Alexandria Arndt and Karley King on a single to left
  • Northern recorded seven extra base hits including doubles from Siebenthal and Arndt and homeruns from Thompson, Cuttic, Merritt, Charchuk, and Zyblut
  • Meghan Anderson tallied her fourth win of the season, giving up just one hit in four innings of work, holding the Miners scoreless

  • The Wolves tallied three runs on seven hits, without giving up an error defensively in game two
  • Northern recorded one run apiece in the opening three innings of play
  • Rachel Reinke opened the night cap with her first homerun of the season, cranking a long ball in the first at-bat of the game
  • Emma Terveer tacked on a run in the second on a single to centerfield, scoring Donnae Morton who was pinching running in the inning
  • Makenzie Merritt tallied the final run of the contest for the Wolves in the third, stealing home and notching her second stolen base of the year
  • Elyse Cuttic threw her first complete game win of the season, giving up just four hits and notching 11 strikeouts
