Aberdeen, S.D. - The Northern State men's and women's track and field programs opened the 2021-22 indoor season at the SDSU Holiday Open Friday in Brookings. Led by
Tanner Berg's weight throw win and 13 total point-scoring performances, the men's team finished fourth out of 14 total teams at the meet. The Northern women also got an event victory from
Shona Juliana in the triple jump and tallied a fourth-place showing out of 13 teams.
MEN'S RESULTS
- Tanner Berg heaved a toss of 68 feet, 1/2 inch on his last throw of the day to win the weight throw by more than a foot. His toss of 20.74 meters easily bested the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard and was just shy of the automatic standard. Berg was also 6th in the shot put.
- Noah Bayer was the only other Northern athlete to score in two individual events, finishing third in the 60 meter dash and 7th in the 300 meter dash.
- Brady Janssen was second in the 300 hurdles.
- Jackson Harrison finished third in the 3,000 meters in 8:34.92.
- Tafara Hondonga claimed third in the 400-meter dash in 50.77 seconds. Chase Domier was seventh in that event with a time of 51.55 seconds.
- Ronald Stephenson finished eighth in the 600 meter dash in 1:24.82.
- Jaden Bohms-Buechler was sixth in the 300-meter dash with a time of 39.52 seconds.
- Darrian Hood finished fifth in the long jump and Glen Quayle was fifth in the pole vault to round out the men's scoring.
WOMEN'S RESULTS
- Shona Juliana set the bar high for her season, smashing a 34-year-old school record in the triple jump. Juliana won that event with a jump of 12.02 meters (39 feet, 5 1/4 inches). The previous record held by Monique Ryckman was set in 1987 with a mark of 11.46 meters (37 feet, 7 1/4 inches).
- Juliana also finished second in the long jump with a mark of 18 feet, 5 inches, which was just off her own school record set last season.
- Juliana's triple jump effort is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Her long jump mark is just off the provisional standard.
- Elsewhere, Kealy Hill was fifth in the pole vault and Tava Berg finished in a tie for seventh in the high jump.
- On the track, it was Megan Mooberry finishing second in the 3,000 meters and Makenna Larson sixth in the 300-meter dash.
- The women's 4x400-meter relay was seventh to round out the day.
UP NEXT
Friday's action concludes the opening meet of the season for the Wolves, who will not have any athletes in action during day two of the SDSU Holiday Invite. The meet also marks the lone competition before the end of the calendar year for Northern, who will reconvene in 2022 to head to U-Mary on Jan. 15.
