Wrestling Breezes Past Dickinson State on Senior Night

Aberdeen, S.D. – The No. 23 Northern State wrestling team (9-6, 2-4 NSIC) won their third straight dual on Wednesday evening over The Dickenson State Blue Hawks (1-2, 0-0 NSAA) 33-9 on senior night.
 
The night began at the 125-weight class where Landen Fischer was able to get a decisive 20-4 technical fall victory over Dante Venema. Dayne Morton was up next and fought hard to build on the momentum at 133, but was unable to outmuscle Gresh Jones in a 4-1 decision loss.
 
Kenny Jones was likewise unable to overcome his opponent, as he fell in an 8-2 decision to Jaime Mullins at 141. After such a good start Northern now found themselves at a 6-5 deficit, but No. 10 Caden Moore took a victory by forfeit at 149, soon followed by a swift victory by fall for Walker Carr at 157, giving the Wolves a 17-6 advantage in a matter of 30 seconds.
 
After the intermission Billy Holton weathered a comeback attempt by Tate Nordby for an 8-5 decision win at 165, followed by a hard fought 10-7 decision win by Tanner Wiese at 174. No. 11 Marcus Placide kept the good times rolling with a victory by fall over Kyle Anderson at 184, bringing the crowd to its feet and giving the Wolves a 29-6 lead.
 
Rounding out the night for Northern was Diego Gallegos at 197 and Caleb Lefferdink at 285. Gallegos managed a convincing 14-5 major decision victory over Payson Dirk and Lefferdink finished the evening with a close 6-3 decision loss, bringing the final score to 33-9.
 
Northern managed two victories by fall, one technical fall, two decisions and two major decisions, while giving up three decisions to the Blue Hawks. No. 11 Marcus Placide continued his great year with yet another win, bringing his record to 24-4 on the season.
 
Up next, the wrestling team travels to Minnesota to play the Minnesota State University Mavericks. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. on February 15.
