Fayette, IA – Wolves strong second quarter propels them over Upper Iowa for the first win of the 2019 season by a final score of 61-42. With the win, the Wolves improve to 6-7 on the season and 3-4 in NSIC play.
Wolves and Peacocks traded baskets in the first quarter as the Wolves trailed Upper Iowa by three heading into the second quarter. Wolves finished the second quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 28-18 lead heading into the intermission. Wolves shot 42.3 percent from the field, 50.0 percent from behind the arc, and out-rebounded the Peacocks 20-14 in the first half.
The Peacocks brought the Wolves lead to four with 5:27 left in the third quarter before the Wolves would make a small run to bring the lead to 11 heading into the final quarter. Wolves started the fourth quarter on an 8-2 run over the first three minutes to extend the lead to 17 point lead, and finish the game winning by 19 points. Wolves shot 42.9 percent from the field, 46.7 percent from behind the arc, out-rebounded the Peacocks 43-25.
Tori Mekash led the Wolves with 15 points on the night with four assists, and four rebounds.
Lexi Wadsworth tallied seven points, eight rebounds, two assists, one block, and one steal.
Anika Fredrick also finished with seven points, four rebounds, three assists, and one block.
Brianna Kusler finished with four points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Last starter for the Wolves was
Brooke Luitjens, she finished with two points, three rebounds, three steals, and one block.
Jessi Marti scored 13 points off the bench with three rebounds, and one steal.
Alayna Johnson tallied double figures with 10 points and three rebounds.
Joie Spier scored two points off the bench with three rebounds.
Zoe Hardwick scored one point in the win with one rebound.
Wolves are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m. against the Warriors of Winona State.
