Dickinson, N.D. – The Northern State University wrestling team sent nine Wolves to the DSU Tyler Plummer Open on Saturday, with seven notching podium finishes.
Adam DeBoer led the way, winning the 149-pound weight class with a 4-0 record.
Robert Coyle III went 2-2 on the day for NSU, taking fourth at 125-pounds. The freshman notching wins over Trey Fischbach of Dickinson State (12-9) and Carl Cronin of Montana Northern (8-0). Nate Rodriguez went 2-2 at 141-pounds with a victory by fall over Antonio Ruiz of Jamestown at 1:50 and a 7-5 decision win over Samuel Sisco of Jamestown.
DeBoer and
Garret Thompson took on the 149-pound weight class, finishing in first and fourth overall. DeBoer opened his day with a 5-2 decision win over Brandon Aragon of Jamestown, and followed with a 13-1 major decision victory over Matthew Shuka of Northwestern (IA) in the quarterfinals. The freshman made his way into the championship bout with a 9-6 decision win over Matt Carlso of Dickinson State, and grabbed the title with a victory by fall. He pinned Dante Preciado of Northwestern (IA) just 31 seconds into the match.
Thompson tallied a 3-2 record on the day, and battled back after falling in the opening round of the tournament. He recorded decision victories over Travis Vermulm of Providence (4-3) and Caleb Haskell of Chadron State (7-2) and a 19-1 technical fall win over Shuka of Northwestern (IA).
Tanner Wiese also reached the championship match at 157-pounds finishing in second overall. Wiese opened his day with a 7-5 sudden victory over Anthony Velazquez of Mary. He then defeated Taner Stone of Dickinson State, 11-10 in the semifinals.
Hudson Pearman also wrestled at 157 and finished his day with a 2-2 record. The freshman opened the tournament with a victory by fall at 2:30 over Konrich Speelmon of Dickinson State. He fell in both the semifinals and consolation semis, advancing to the fifth place match and his second against Speelmon. Pearman came away with a 7-5 sudden victory and finished his day taking fifth.
Riley Lura and
Caleb Lefferdink were the final two Wolves in action, each advancing to the championship matches. The pair went 3-1 on the day, taking second at 184 and 285.
Lura notched back-to-back wins by fall over Caleb Boyles of Northwestern (IA) at 4:48 and Jake French of Montana Northern at 3:19. He advanced to the championship, with a 4-3 decision win over Bennett Sikkink.
Lefferdink recorded decision wins in the opening round and semifinals over KC Buday (5-3) and Casey Jones of Dickinson State (4-3). He also tallied a victory by fall over Joshuah Vigil-Harrison of Minot State at 2:59 in the quarterfinal bout.
The Wolves return to dual action next Friday, January 18 at Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota.
