Darian Leschewski took the Northern State University soccer team on her back in the opening game of the 2018 season. The Wolves defeated Black Hills State, 2-0, in the inaugural contest from the NSU Athletic and Recreation Fields, in front of 372 fans.
Leschewski netted both goals for the Wolves in the win. She gave the Wolves the lead at the 38:25 mark with a header from the left side of the box, assisted by
Mallory Schoenhard, and then extended the lead with just five minutes remaining in regulation.
Teya Trujillo assisted the second score of the evening, a ball that sailed into the top left corner of the net.
The senior led the team in the game with six shots, as the Wolves combined for 23 total, including 11 on goal. Northern also grabbed nine corner kicks to the Yellow Jackets three, and gave up just three fouls to Black Hills' seven.
Shianne Rosselli and
Catherine Nakae were second on the team with four shots each, while
Stephany Estrada and
Tori Collesso each grabbed three. Trujillo,
Karli Harney, and
Jocelin Martinez added the final three shots for the Wolves in the win.
Jessica Otto notched her first collegiate win for NSU, playing all 90 minutes with six saves.
Northern returns to the pitch on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. home match-up against Jamestown.
