Winona, Minn. – The Northern State University softball team dropped their final two regular season contests of the year to No. 7 Winona State. The Wolves fell 2-1 and 7-3, moving to 28-20 overall and 18-10 in the NSIC.
Northern scored first in the top of the second with one run off the bat of
Courtney Sjerven.
Madison Rutter led off the frame with a single to left and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Katie Uittenbogaard. Emma Treveer then entered to pinch run, and scored on a single by Sjerven. The Warriors answered back in the bottom of the third, grabbing the 2-1 lead which held through the final four innings of action.
Sjerven led the team in the game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a triple.
Jenna Helgeson notched a double while
Kaitlyn King and Rutter each notched a single. Northern tallied five team hits in the loss, leaving eight total runners on base.
Jamie Fisher started for the Wolves throwing six complete innings in her 11
th loss of the season. Fisher gave up just two earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.
The Wolves scored first again in game two notching one run in the top of the second off the bat of Uittenbogaard. Winona State tied things up in the bottom of the fourth and took the 7-1 lead in the fifth and sixth innings. Northern battled with two runs in the top of the seventh as Rutter scored Helgeson on a double to left, and Sjerven scored Rutter on an infield single. Even with the rally, the Wolves were unable to make up the difference and fell for the second time on the day.
Rutter led the team in the game going 2-for-3 with a run scored, and RBI, and two doubles. Helgeson added a double, while Sjerven, King, Thompson, Dawson, and
Cassidy Schaar each notched a single.
Fisher started for the Wolves suffering her second loss of the afternoon, throwing 4.2 innings and giving up five earned runs on seven hits with one strikeout.
Makenzie Merritt entered in relief, giving up two earned runs on three hits.
The Wolves have earned the fifth seed in the NSIC Tournament and will face fourth seeded St. Cloud State on Thursday at 12 p.m. from Bowden Field in Sioux Falls. Full NSIC Tournament information can be found
