Moorhead, Minn. – The Northern State University softball team rolled to their third straight NSIC sweep on Thursday afternoon, defeating MSU Moorhead 6-0 and 12-1. The Wolves improved to 27-17 overall and 17-7 in the league, heading into the final weekend of the regular season.
Northern scored in three of the seven innings of game two, notching one run in the first, two in the second, and three in the sixth.
Kennady Thompson plated
Kaitlyn King on an error in the first, while
Courtney Sjerven doubled in
Madison Rutter and
Katie Uittenbogaard in the second.
Natalie Gabbert notched a double of her own in the sixth scoring
Anne Jonas and
Jenna Helgeson, while Sjerven notched her second 2-baser of the afternoon scoring Gabbert.
Sjerven led the team in the win going 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Katie Dawson all tallied three hits in three at bats, while
Kennady Thompson went 2-for-4. King, Helgeson, and Gabbert tallied the final three hits for the Wolves as Northern belted out 11 in the win.
Jamie Fisher tied the single season school record with her 20
th of the year, throwing 7.0 complete innings. The junior also threw her fifth shutout of the season, giving up just four hits and striking out six.
The Wolves continued to pound out the runs in game two, notching two apiece in the first and the second, one in the third, three in the fifth, and four in the sixth. Their 12 runs off 13 hits handed MSUM a run rule loss, as the Dragons were unable to make up the difference.
Fisher led the team offensively in game two, going 4-for-4 with a run scored, a double, and three RBI. Rutter was close behind with three hits, including a homerun, in four plate appearances. The sophomore added one run scored and four RBI for NSU.
Thompson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while
Mackenzie Thielen went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Sjerven and Dawson tallied a single each, as Sjerven led the team with three runs scored.
Makenzie Merritt started in the circle for NSU, throwing 6.0 complete innings in her seventh with of the season. The freshman gave up just one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts and four walks.
The Wolves conclude the regular season this weekend at Upper Iowa and Winona State. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. each day with Northern taking on the Peacocks on Saturday and the Warriors on Sunday.
