Wolves Outlast No. 21 Vikings in Game One Thriller

Aberdeen, S.D.  – The Northern State University softball team split with No. 21 Augustana University on Monday evening from the Presentation College Dome. The Wolves won the opening game 3-2, and fell in the night cap 1-0. With the spilt, NSU moves to 20-14 overall and 10-4 in the league.
 
Augustana struck first in game one, notching a run in the bottom of the first frame. Northern forced some defense pressure in the top of the third and knotted the scoreboard up. With runners on the corners, Courtney Sjerven stole second base, forcing a throwing error by the catcher which plated Kaitlyn King.
 
The Wolves then took the lead in the top of the fourth, on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Jenna Helgeson. Rachel Reinke scored on the play, after pinch running for Kennady Thompson who led off the inning with a single to center. NSU added a run of insurance in the sixth, off a single down the right field line by King, scoring Natalie Gabbert who was in to pinch run for Jamie Fisher who led off the inning with a double to right center.
 
Northern played stellar defense throughout, going errorless in the field and notching ten groundouts and eight fly outs. Fisher started on the bump, earning her 16th win of the season. The junior threw seven complete, giving up just two earned runs on nine hits with one walk. Fisher was also one of two Wolves to go 2-for-3 on offense, notching a double.
 
King led the team going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.  Thompson, Katie Dawson, and Katie Uittenbogaard each added a single as the Wolves tallied seven team hits. Helgeson notched the second RBI, while Thompson recorded the lone walk for NSU. The victory marks the first for the Wolves over the Vikings since the 2013 season.
 
The Wolves were held scoreless in game two with Dawson and Mackenzie Thielen notching the two team hits. Thompson drew a walk in the top of the seventh with 2-outs however, Northern was unable to put a run across in the 1-0 loss.
 
Makenzie Merritt started for the Wolves throwing 5.1 innings, giving up just one earned run on two hits with three walks. Fisher entered in the sixth, giving up just one hit in three batters faced.
 
The Wolves return to action on Thursday at Minnesota Duluth. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. from Griggs Field between the Wolves and Bulldogs.
