Winona, Minn. – The No. 16 Northern State University men's basketball team notched an 18-point victory over Winona State on Saturday, defeating the Warriors 82-64. NSU improved to 23-3 overall and 16-2 in the league following the win.
It was all Northern State in the first half, as the Wolves out-scored the Warriors 46-28. Winona State battled back in the second, with each team scoring 36 points, they however were unable to overcome the first half deficit.
As a team, the Wolves shot 48.4 percent from the floor, 46.7 percent from the arc, and 72.7 percent from the foul line. The Warriors on the other hand, shot 40.0 percent from the floor, 23.1 percent from the 3-point line, and 62.5 percent from the charity stripe. Northern knocked down 14 3-pointers, to Winona's six, and out-rebounded WSU 39-33 in the win.
The Wolves tallied 32 points in the paint, 30 points off the bench, 11 points off turnovers, nine second chance points, and two fast break scores. They combined for 16 assists, five blocks, and three steals, while giving up just seven turnovers. Defensively they forced seven turnovers as well and held the Warriors to just six offensive boards.
Cole Dahl led the team with 15 points, knocking down 4-of-6 from the arc and 5-of-8 from the field. He added three rebounds as well.
DJ Pollard and
Ian Smith drained 12 points and grabbed six rebounds each. The pair shot a combined 50.0 percent from the floor, with Smith notched two long range scorers and Pollard tallying a team leading two steals.
Logan Doyle led the team off the bench and was the final Wolf in double figures with ten points and five rebounds. The senior shot 50.0 percent from the floor and added a team leading four assists and two blocks.
Gabe King and
Carter Evans rounded out the starting five with eight and five points respectively. King tallied a team leading seven rebounds, and hit two from beyond the arc, while Evans tallied three rebounds, two assists, and a team leading two blocks.
Andrew Kallman notched nine points, going 3-of-5 from the 3-point line, and added two assists.
Darin Peterka and
Bo Fries recorded six and five points respectively, with Peterka dishing out a team leading four assists and grabbing a team second best six rebounds.
Northern will remain on the road next weekend at Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Friday versus the Golden Eagles and 6 p.m. on Saturday against the Beavers.
