Aberdeen, S.D. – The No. 12 Northern State University men's basketball team finished off the regular season on a 6-game win streak, defeating St. Cloud State 83-63. The Wolves snapped the Huskies 10-game win streak, improving to 27-3 overall and 20-2 in the NSIC.
The Wolves were out for revenge after a road loss to the Huskies earlier this season. Despite a few lead changes early in the first half, Northern ran away with the game, notching the 20-point victory. They held their largest lead, of 28-points with 6:32 remaining in regulation. The Wolves shot 51.5 percent from the floor and 78.6 percent from the foul line in the win.
Northern tallied a combined 58 points in the paint, 25 points off the bench, 19 points off turnovers, and 17 second chance points. They forced 14 turnovers, while only giving up eight and out-rebounded St. Cloud State by 17 in the game. The Wolves added 11 assists, six steals, and two blocks, while tallying 20 offensive and 20 defensive boards.
Carter Evans led the team with 20 points and a career high 15 rebounds. The senior tallied three assists as well, while shooting 58.8 percent from the field.
Darin Peterka was close behind with 18 points of his own, shooting 53.3 percent from the floor. Peterka added five rebounds and two assists, as well as a team high five steals.
Logan Doyle led the team off the bench with 17 points, knocking down 8-of-10 from the floor. He added one block and one made free throw attempt.
Bo Fries added seven points off the bench, while
Andrew Kallman notched one. Fries and Kallman tallied five and four rebounds each, while the freshman added two assists and one steal.
DJ Pollard was the final Wolf in double figures, notching 11 points, three rebounds, one assist, and one block. Pollard shot 4-of-8 from the field and 3-of-4 from the foul line.
Gabe King knocked down six points and grabbed four rebounds, while
Ian Smith tallied three points and one rebound.
Northern concludes the regular season with 23 double figure victories, and 11 by 20 points or more. They shot 50.0 percent from the floor or better in 16 contests, and tallied 13 games with double figure 3-pointers made.
The Wolves return to action on Wednesday from Wachs Arena in the opening round of the NSIC Tournament. Northern will face off at 8 p.m. with their opponent still to be determined.
