Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University soccer team made it a team effort in their home opener, defeating Black Hills State 4-0 from Jerde Field. With the win, NSU improves to 1-0 heading into their second and final non-conference game of the season.
Alison Byrd scored the team's first goal of the season, just 3:56 into the game. Byrd crossed the ball into
Stephany Estrada who fed it back to Byrd for the score.
Shianne Rosselli connected with net for the second goal in the first half sending a high shot into the top right corner. Rosselli was assisted by Byrd on the play.
The two teams headed to halftime with a 2-0 Wolves lead. Midway through the second half,
Elise Benner extended the Northern State lead with her first score of the season. Benner took possession just outside of the box and lifted the ball over the keepers head for the score. It looked as though the 3-0 score would stand as the clock ticked down, however
Megan Norton had other thoughts. With just 1:04 remaining, Norton slide one past the Yellow Jackets keeper after a quick through ball from Rosselli.
Senior goalkeeper
Justine Charles earned her first shutout of the season, and second of her career in the win. Charles recorded four saves through 90 minutes of play. The Wolves out-shot the Yellow Jackets 30-10, including a 13-4 with shots on goal in the game. NSU also tallied eight corner kicks to BHSU's one in the match.
Byrd led the team with ten shots and four shots on goal. Benner, Rosselli, and
Alexis Lewis each notched three shots for a team second best mark. Lewis and Rosselli, in addition to
Stephany Estrada sat second on the team with two shots on goal.
Northern returns to Jerde Field Friday at 4 p.m. versus Missouri Western State.
