Marshall, Minn. – The Northern State University soccer team picked up a win in their first road game of the season, defeating Southwest Minnesota State 2-1. NSU improves to 2-0 in NSIC play and 3-1 overall, while SMSU falls to 0-2 in conference, 0-4 overall.
The Wolves jumped on the board early in the match when
Stephany Estrada netted the first goal of the game at the 5:01 mark. Eight minutes later, the Mustangs followed with a goal of their own which tied the game 1-1. Neither side scored with time winding down in the first half and entered the locker room tied. After six minutes of play in the second half,
Nicole Griffith connected with the ball for the game winning goal.
Estrada led NSU with two shots, one shot on goal, and one goal. Griffith followed with one shot, one shot on goal, and one goal.
Shianne Rosselli recorded four shots and one shot on goal, while
Justine Charles tallied four saves in 90 minutes of play.
As a team, the Wolves out-shot SMSU 13 shots and five shots on goal to nine shots and five shots on goal. Northern also registered nine corner kicks to SMSU's five.
The Wolves are back on the road as they travel to Sioux Falls S.D. to face the Cougars of University of Sioux Falls at 1 p.m. on Sunday Sept. 17.
