Minot, N.D. – The Northern State University baseball team split with Minot State University Tuesday evening falling in game one 7-3, and coming back with a 12-3 victory in game two. Following the doubleheader the Wolves move to 13-17 overall and 6-12 in league action.
Minot State scored first in game one with three runs in their first appearances at the plate. The Wolves tied things at 3-all midway through the sixth inning, however the Beavers tallied four runs in the bottom half of the inning securing the game one victory.
Northern notched seven total hits as a team led by
Jack Schmidt,
Ben Carolin, and
Lucas Lorenz with a double each. Lorenz and Schmidt each notched an RBI, while Schmidt,
Tyler Gripentrog and
Mikey Barreneche tallied a run scored. Barreneche, Gripentrog,
Easton Lopez, and
Patrick Leary tallied the final three hits for the time, all of which were singles.
Sam Krapf started on the hill for the Wolves throwing 5.1 innings in his fourth loss of the season. Krapf gave up six runs on six hits and struck out three in the outing.
Andrew Nichols entered in relief giving up one run on two hits with a walk.
The Wolves quickly bounced back in game two scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. NSU tallied five runs on two hits and two errors to take the lead which held throughout the game. Northern added seven more runs in the third, fourth, sixth, eighth, and ninth securing their 13
th victory of the season.
Barreneche led the team in game two going 3-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Lucas Lorenz and
Ben Allen followed with two hits and two RBI, as Lorenz belted his seventh homerun of the season.
Jack Schmidt connected for his second long ball of the year and only hit of the game. Also notching a hit for the Wolves was Carolin, Gripentrog, Lopez, and Leary as the team combined for 12 in the win.
Nick Hoffard started for the Wolves earning his third win of the season. Hoffard threw 8.2 innings giving up three earned runs on seven hits and striking out five.
Nate Zeise entered in relief closing out the game for the Wolves with a ground ball out to second base.
The Wolves return to action this Friday and Saturday for a 4-game road series with the University of Mary. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Friday and 12 p.m. on Saturday from Bismarck.
