Bismarck, N.D. – The Northern State University baseball team notched their second NSIC sweep of the season defeating the University of Mary on the road. The Wolves improved to 15-17 overall and 8-12 in league play following the two wins.
The Wolves scored early and often in the 11-0 game one win over the Marauders with runs in five of the seven innings. Northern tallied nine hits in the win, while NSU starter
Luke Chevalier held the Marauders to just two hits. Chevalier threw a complete game shutout, notching a season high 11 strikeouts in his fourth win of the year. The seven scoreless innings moved the sophomore's season ERA to 1.88, down 0.32 from the start of the week.
The NSU offense notched one run each in the second and third innings, but broke things open in the third tallying three runs for the 5-0 lead. They added another four runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh securing their 14
th victory of the season.
Mikey Barreneche and
Tyler Gripentrog led the team with two hits each. Gripentrog went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, a double, and an RBI. Barreneche went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI as well.
Jack Schmidt and
Ben Allen each tallied a hit, and led the two with two RBI apiece.
Lucas Lorenz,
Seth Sullwold, and
Zach Beatty tallied the final three hits for the Wolves in the win.
The Wolves jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Mary answered in the bottom half of the frame with four runs, however the NSU lead held as the Wolves notched two runs in the second, three runs in the fifth, and a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh. The win marks the first mercy rule victory for the Wolves in NSIC play.
Jack Schmidt led the team going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Lucas Lorenz and
Easton Lopez followed with three hits each in the win. Lorenz went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and six RBI. He notched a double and two homeruns leading the team in extra base hits as the Wolves tallied seven total.
Ben Carolin tallied the final team hit, going 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Thomas Sertic tallied his fourth win of the season throwing five complete innings for the Wolves. Sertic gave up four runs on six hits and struck out seven in the outing.
Chase Tunstall entered in relief, closing out the final two innings. The junior gave up just one unearned run on three hits with one strikeout.
The Wolves return to action tomorrow versus the Marauders with a 12 p.m. start from Bismarck.
