Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University soccer team dropped a close match to Winona State 3-2 in double overtime. The Wolves fall to 4-9-1 overall and 3-8-1 in conference play, while the Warriors improve to 8-6-1 overall and 6-5-1 in the NSIC.
WSU was the first to jump on the board with a goal as the scoreboard read 29:50. Nearly 12 minutes into the second half, the Warriors added another goal to take the 2-0 lead. The Wolves however did not let up answering back twice in the final 30 minutes of regulation.
Freshman
Emily Reiten connected with Shianne Rosselli for the Wolves first score of the afternoon, cutting the Warrior lead in half. Nichole Griffith and
Sydney Shintaffer then teamed up, tying things at 2-all, on a corner kick at the 65:20 mark. The two teams battled through the final minutes of regulation and the first overtime period, before WSU sealed the game winning goal in double overtime.
The Wolves registered 16 shots with three shots on goal and six corner kicks. Shintaffer led NSU with two shots and one goal, while Rosselli tallied one shot and one goal.
Alison Byrd contributed four shots and one shot on goal.
Justine Charles recorded five saves in 108 minutes of play.
The Wolves continue NSIC play with a match-up against Upper Iowa tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Jerde Field.
