Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University football team fell, 44-17, to Bemidji State in the 62
nd Annual Shrine Game from Swisher Field on Saturday. The Wolves drop to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the NSIC North.
Northern scored first in the game, after
Quest Parham notched the first interception of his career on the Beavers fifth play of the opening drive. The Wolves quickly trotted down the field with three first downs from
Zachery Barber,
Zech Culbreath, and
Hunter Trautman.
Nicholas Truen broke through the BSU defense with the Wolves on the 20 yard line, notching his first touchdown of the game. Truen added another score in the fourth quarter, a one yard run, bringing the Wolves within 13 of the Beavers.
The story of the game for the Wolves, however came from senior kicker
Nathan Shaw. With the Wolves down, 23-7 heading into the final seconds of the first half, Shaw stepped up for a 23 yard field goal attempt. The Acworth, Ga. Native connected for the 27
th field goal of his career, making him the all-time Northern State leader.
Northern tallied 22 first downs, 123 yards rushing, 218 yards passing, and 341 yards of total offense in the game. The Wolves converted on eight of their 18 third downs and scored on all three red-zone chances on offense. Defensively they tallied five sacks for a total loss of 35 yards and held the Beavers to just 4-of-11 on third down conversions.
Hunter Trautman threw for a career high 218 yards with 26 completions and a 23 yard long to
Zachery Barber. Truen led the Northern State rushers with 56 total yards and two touchdowns, while averaging 5.1 yards per carry. Barber led the receivers making some stellar catches with 89 total yards.
Noah MacPherson led the Wolves defense with 12 total tackles, including a half a sack.
Alex Gray was second on the team with nine tackles, while
Josh Coyle and
Joe Gorghuber followed with seven tackles each. Coyle and Gorghuber each tallied a half sack as well as
Preston Droessler, while
Zach Mohs led the team with two sacks, followed by
Brian Sumption with one.
Jacob Wiedrich punted for 264 yards, averaging 37.7 yards per punt with a 44 yard long and one touchback. Shaw recorded 188 yards on kickoffs with a 62.0 yard average.
Zech Culbreath led the returners with 69 yards, including a 34 yard long, while
Raekwon Robinson followed with 43 yards.
The Wolves return to action next Saturday, on the road at St. Cloud State. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. between the Wolves and the Huskies.
