Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University football team fell to Minnesota Duluth 41-0 in the 2
nd Annual Blackout Cancer game from Swisher Field. The two team's entered, both undefeated in the NSIC North Division, however the Wolves dropped to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the North.
The Bulldogs scored early and often in the match-up with 14 points in the first, seven points in the second, 14 points in the third, and six points in the fourth. Northern threatened in the fourth with what would have been a field goal attempt, but a slippery ball from the rain resulted in a muffed hold off the snap.
Northern tallied 83 yards of total offense as a team, as they struggled to get through the Duluth front lines.
Chaka Kelly led the NSU rushers with 34 yards, while
Nicholas Truen followed with 27. Truen also led the team with 16 yards receiving.
Jacob Wiedrich got his reps in punting, notching 286 total yards on nine punts. The junior averaged 31.8 yards per punt with a 61 yard long and one touchback.
Zachery Barber was the lone kick returner for the Wolves in the game, compiling 115 total yards with a 23 yard long.
Noah MacPherson and
Cody Braeger led the defense with nine tackles apiece. Braeger tallied two tackles for a total loss of three yards, including a sack, while MacPherson forced a fumble.
Brady Thielges and
Josh Hilgemann each notched a forced fumble as well, while
Etienne Ezeff,
Marcus Marcellus, and
AJ Frazier tallied pass break-ups.
Northern returns to the Swisher sidelines next Saturday for a 2 p.m. match-up against Bemidji State in the 62
nd Annual Shrine Game. The game is one of the longest running Shrine contests in the country.
