St. Cloud, Minn. – For the second straight day the Northern State University baseball team split with No. 2 St. Cloud State University. The Wolves dropped game one with a score of 7-0, however bounced back for the 6-2 game two victory. Northern moves to 17-20 overall and 10-14 in the NSIC, and currently sits tenth in the league with six games remaining in the regular season.
Game 1
The Wolves were held scoreless in the first game of the day, by SCSU starter Giese who gave up seven hits.
Ben Allen and
Mikey Barreneche led the NSU offense, each going 2-for-3 in the loss.
Tyler Gripentrog,
Matt Stubbs and
Lucas Lorenz notched the team's final three hits in the game.
Phil Sauer made the start for the Wolves giving up five earned runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings of work.
Colton Landreth entered in relief throwing the final 2.1 innings of play. Landreth gave up two earned runs on three hits and added three strikeouts.
Game 2
With the Wolves in need of a victory, the NSU bats came alive in game two. Northern pounded out ten hits and six runs to secure their second victory of the weekend over the second ranked team in the nation.
Northern quickly took a two run lead in the second, and added another score in the fourth.
Kolin Kubitz stepped to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded in the second.
Ben Allen reached on a walk, while
Mikey Barreneche tallied a single and
Easton Lopez was hit by a pitch. Kubitz doubled to the outfield, scoring both Allen and Barreneche on the play.
St. Cloud State fought back with two runs in the bottom of the eighth, however the Wolves held on to score two runs in the top of the ninth and secure the victory.
Nick Hoffard tallied his fifth victory of the season throwing seven complete innings for the Wolves. Hoffard held the Huskies scoreless and gave up just four hits in a great outing for the junior.
Marcus Manderbach and
Colton Boucher entered in relief for NSU. Boucher threw 1.2 innings and earned his first save of 2016. The senior gave up just one hit and struck out two in the game.
Jack Schmidt was the lone Wolf to record multiple hits in the game, as the sophomore went 3-for-4 at the plate.
Ashton Williamson and
Kolin Kubitz connected for a double apiece, while
Matt Stubbs,
Lucas Lorenz,
Ben Allen,
Mikey Barreneche, and
Easton Lopez each notched a single. Kubit led the team with two RBI, while Lorenz and Allen notched one each.
The Wolves return to action on Wednesday from Aberdeen in their home finale. NSU will face U-Mary in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. from Fossum Field.
