Wolves Bounce Back to Sweep Minot State

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University baseball team came home with a Friday sweep on Minot State University from Fossum Field. The Wolves took down the Beavers with game scores of 13-2 and 12-2, to improve to 13-16 overall and 6-10 in NSIC play.
 
Game 1
 
The Wolves scored in five of their six innings at the plate with one in the first and second, five in both the third and fourth, and another one in the fifth. The Beavers fought back with two runs in the top of the seventh, snapping starter Nick Hoffard's shot-out however it was not enough to overcome the 13 run deficit. Hoffard threw a complete game for the Wolves giving up just three hits and no earned runs while striking out three. The win marks the junior's third of the year.
 
Ben Allen led the NSU offense going 2-for-2 with a walk. Allen notched a double, while scoring three runs and hitting in three. Also recording two hits in the game were Tyler Gripentrog and Jack Schmidt. The duo each added a run scored and an RBI, as Gripentrog tallied the team's first extra base hit.
 
Matt Stubbs, Lucas Lorenz, Mikey Barreneche, and Easton Lopez each added a hit apiece, bringing the team total to ten for the game. Lopez matched Allen's team leading three RBI, while Barreneche drew two walks.  
 
Game 2
 
The Wolves added another 12 runs and 11 hits to secure the mercy rule victory in game two. Starter Cody Vandever threw seven complete innings for the Wolves giving up just one earned run and seven hits. Vandever notched a season high eight strikeouts in 29 batters faced. Nate Zeise entered in relief, throwing a scoreless eighth inning.
 
Northern opened the game with three runs in the bottom of the first and tallied a game high five runs in the seventh. Tyler Gripentrog was the first Wolf to reach base in the seventh, drawing the walk. Matt Stubbs and Ben Allen loaded the bases reaching on an error by the third basemen and a walk. After a single in game one, Lucas Lorenz stepped to the plate and belted a grandslam to left center field. Preston Brown plated the team's final run of the game on a double to left center, scoring Barreneche would was hit by a pitch on the previous at-bat.
 
Mikey Barreneche led the Wolves in the game, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Tyler Gripentrog and Jack Schmidt also recorded multiple hits with two each. Kolin Kubitz, Lucas Lorenz, Preston Brown, and Easton Lopez rounded out the team total.
 
The Wolves will remain at Fossum Field for a second doubleheader with the Beavers of Minot State. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. from Fossum Field.
