Wolves Combine for 19 Hits in 18-7 Victory over Minot State

Tucson, Ariz. – The Northern State University baseball team earned their sixth victory of the season, defeating Minot State 18-7 from Tucson. The Wolves improve to 6-4 overall tallying 19 hits and playing solid defense with no errors given up.
 
NSU was led by shortstop Mikey Barreneche going 4-for-6 with one run scored and two runs batted in. Jack Schmidt, Lucas Lorenz, and Ben Allen followed with three hits each in the victory. Schmidt notched three runs scored and three runs batted in with a double, while Lorenz added three runs scored and five runs batted in with two homeruns. Allen recorded a team second best four runs batted in, and crossed the plate two times in the game.
 
Easton Lopez and Tyler Gripentrog were the final Wolves to record multiple hit games, with two each. Lopez notched two runs scored and one run batted in, while Gripentrog tallied two runs scored and three runs batted in. Kolin Kubitz and Matt Stubbs combined for the team's final two hits in the game.
 
The Wolves were fierce on the base paths with five stolen bases, led by Preston Brown and Gripentrog with two apiece. Offensively the Wolves tallied runs in six of the nine innings of play, with eight in the top of the second. Northern answered with a pair of runs in the third and fourth, while adding two in the fifth, and three in both the eighth and the ninth. The eight runs in the second sealed the victory for NSU and starter Marcus Manderbach.
 
Ben Allen led off the second with a single and advanced on a Preston Brown hit by pitch. Easton Lopez followed with a bunt single, and the bases were loaded for Tyler Gripentrog in the nine spot. Gripentrog connected for a single to left scoring both Allen and Brown, and tying the game at two all. Mikey Barreneche matched Gripentrog with his own single to left, scoring Lopez and leaving runners in scoring position for Kolin Kubitz. Kubitz loaded the bases for the second time in the inning with a bunt single. NSU offensive leader Jack Schmidt took on the bases loaded challenge with a double to center, adding three RBI to his season total. Senior Matt Stubbs followed with a single, while Lucas Lorenz and Ben Allen hit back-to-back sacrifice flies scoring both Schmidt and Stubbs.
 
The Wolves continued to pressure the Beavers throughout the game, bringing in a total of eight more earned runs and ten runs total. In addition, NSU suffered only six strikeouts and put 39 balls in play.
 
Manderbach threw five complete innings, facing 28 batters. The senior gave up seven earned runs on ten hits and struck out ten in the game. Brock Ragatz, Luke Chevalier, Nate Zeise, and Dillon Lee entered to throw a combined four innings of scoreless relief for NSU. Chevalier tallied two strikeouts in the win, while Lee notched one.
 
Northern returns to action tomorrow versus the University of Dubuque. Game time is set for 10 a.m. (MT) from Tucson. The Spartans are 3-3 heading into tomorrow.
