Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University men's basketball team complete the weekend NSIC sweep with an 86-74 victory over Wayne State to cap off "I Hate Winter". The Wolves improved to 14-10 overall and 10-8 in league action, heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.
Skye Warwick led the NSU offense with 18 points in the victory. Warwick shot 6-of-11 from the floor and 5-of-10 from the arc in 31 minutes played.
Carter Evans was close behind with 17 on the night. He also added a team leading five rebounds, matched by
Bo Fries,
Spencer Pankonin, and
DJ Pollard. Evans shot 7-of-11 from the floor with three assists and two blocks in just 17 minutes played.
The Wolves continued their sharp shooting from a night ago hitting 30-of-53 (56.6%) from the floor and 13-of-25 (52.0%) from the arc. In return, NSU held their opponents to a 45.5 percent mark from field goal range, and 26.7 percent mark from the arc.
Northern tallied 26 points off the bench led by senior
Spencer Pankonin with 14. Pankonin added one assist and one block, while shooting over 70 percent from the floor.
Mack Arvidson added five points in 19 minutes played, while
Michael Schreiber and
Ian Smith notched four and three respectively.
The two teams were equal on the boards with 32 in the game, as well as in the paint with 34 points. Northern suffered 13 turnovers which resulted in 17 Wildcat points, however held off their opponents on defense.
Also scoring in double-digits was starter
DJ Pollard with 13 in the win.
Darin Peterka led the Wolves in assists for the 16
th time this season with six total. Peterka also added seven points, three rebounds, and one steal.
Bo Fries added five points and three rebounds for the Wolves.
NSU tallied a strong first half with 41 points to Wayne's 29. The Wildcats fought back with 45 points in the second however it was not enough to overcome the 22 points deficit heading into the final five minutes of play.
With the win, Northern moves into third in the NSIC North and just one game ahead U-Mary. The Wolves will look to keep the momentum rolling has they fight for a first round NSIC Tournament home game.
NSU will hit the road for the final time this regular season versus St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth. Northern will then face-off against Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State in the regular season finale at home.
