NSIC BracketAberdeen, S.D. - The Northern State University men's basketball team will open the 2016 NSIC/Sanford Health Basketball Tournament tomorrow from Wachs Arena. The Wolves will face-off against Southwest Minnesota State at 8 p.m., in the third meeting of the season between the two squads. The NSU women will also face Southwest beginning at 6 p.m. prior to the men's tip.
The Wolves pulled together an exciting weekend in the NSIC regular season finale with a pair of victories over Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State. After a slow start to the season, NSU returned in 2016 to go 11-5 overall and finish second in the NSIC North Division. Senior
Skye Warwick led the squad with 33 points and the game winning 3-pointer to lift NSU over Bemidji State 71-69. Northern is shooting 49.3% from the floor, 42.3% from the arc, and 68.6% from the foul line this season. The Wolves rank second in the league in 3-point percentage (42.3), 3-point field goals made (10.1) and turnover margin (+1.11) behind Augustana.
Skye Warwick is averaging 17 points and shooting 55% from the floor and 50% from the arc in the month of February.He is also leading the league in 3-point field goals made with 95 this season.
About the Mustangs • Southwest Minnesota enters the weekend with a 3-3 record in the final six games of the season.
• The Mustangs are shooting 49.5% from the floor, 37.5% from the arc, and 72.3% from the foul line this season.
• SMSU is led by head coach Brad Bigler in his seventh season at the helm. Bigler has tallied a career record of 108-94 heading into the match-up.
• Mitch Weg is leading three scorers averaging double figures this season, notching 12-8 points per game. He is also leading the team pulling down 7.3 rebounds per game.
Last Match-Up • The Mustangs defeated the Wolves 111-105 (OT) in non-conference action, however NSU bounced back for a 79-63 victory in league action.
