Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University women's basketball team picks up another victory from Wachs Arena tonight against the University of Minnesota Crookston, ending the match with a 71-60 final score. The Wolves advance to 20-6 overall and 16-5 in conference action, while the Golden Eagles fall to 17-8 overall and 14-7 in the NSIC.
Northern State and Minnesota Crookston, two teams neck in neck at the top of the North Division, battled throughout the course of the match-up. NSU ended the first quarter with the 11-9 advantage, as senior
Devon Brecke collected nine of the initial 11 points. Northern State maintained a 28-25 lead entering half time.
The Wolves held the Golden Eagles, the NSIC leaders from beyond three-point range, to just two three-pointers in 21 attempts in two quarters.
Lauren Deadrick started off the second half for the Wolves putting up six consecutive points from the paint. Minnesota Crookston responded by stepping up their sharp shooting from three-point range, tying up the match 47-47. NSU broke away by the end of the final quarter, ending the game with an 11 point spread.
As a team, NSU shot 48.3 percent from field goal range, 25.0 percent from beyond the three-point arc and 73.3 percent from the free-throw line. The Wolves had four athletes scoring in double-digits, led by senior
Devon Brecke with a season-high 27 points.
Lauren Deadrick collected 16 points,
Jill Conrad recorded 14 and
Alexis Tappe followed with 10 on the night. Of NSU's 71 total points, 42 came from within the paint.
Northern State outrebounded the Golden Eagles 39-33, and lifted five steals in the match.
Jill Conrad and
Lauren Deadrick each picked up eight rebounds, while
Paige Waytashek nabbed two steals.
Alexis Thielman led the Golden Eagles offensively, as she recorded 25 points, going 4-10 from three-point range. Micaela Noga of Minnesota Crookston was solid on the boards, notching 12 of the team's 33 rebounds.
NSU will return to Wachs Arena tomorrow night at 4 p.m. against Bemidji State to celebrate Senior Night, representing
Devon Brecke and
Lauren Deadrick.
