Photo GalleryAberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University men's basketball team, handily defeated Minnesota Crookston, 79-50, in Friday NSIC action. With the win, the Wolves improve to 16-11 overall and 12-9 in the league. NSU also moves ahead of Minnesota Duluth in the NSIC North standings, and currently sits tied for second with U-Mary.
Darin Peterka led three Wolves in double figures with 16 points in the win. Peterka shot 5-of-7 from the floor and added six rebounds and a team leading six assists.
Carter Evans followed with 13 points, and a team best eight boards and three blocks, while
Mack Arvidson notched another ten NSU scores off the bench.
Northern controlled the action most of the game, as the score was tied for only 50 seconds in the first half of play. The Wolves out-shot the Golden Eagles 53.6 percent to 38.2 percent, and out-rebounded UMC a whopping 24-28. NSU knocked down ten 3-point baskets at a 40 percent clip and recorded a game leading 32 points in the paint.
Starters
Bo Fries and
Skye Warwick, along with
Ian Smith off the bench combined for 18 points in the win. The trio each knocked down nine points. Smith pulled in a team second best six rebounds, while Fries and
DJ Pollard dished out three assists each. Pollard added six points to the team total and four rebounds.
Michael Schreiber saw more action for the Wolves with seven points and five rebounds off the bench in 19 minutes of action.
The Wolves return to their roots of taking care of the ball, giving up only seven turnovers in the win for only two UMC scores. In return, NSU forced 9 Golden Eagles turnovers for a total of 17 points. The men also added 12 points off 12 offensive rebounds.
Northern returns to Wachs Arena for the regular season finale, tomorrow night versus Bemidji State. The Wolves and Beavers will tip-off at 6 p.m. on Senior Night.
