Skye Warwick, knocked down his 300
th in dramatic fashion Saturday. Warwick's sixth of the night came with just seconds remaining and was the game winner, as Northern State University defeated Bemidji State 71-69. It was a bit of sweet revenge for the Wolves, who had fallen to the Beavers in similar fashion earlier this season. NSU improved to 17-11 overall and 13-9 in NSIC action after the weekend sweep.
Warwick and the Wolves battled throughout the physical game, which consisted of seven tie scores and 12 lead changes. Although the score seemed to go back and forth, Northern held the lead for over 25 minutes in the match, ultimately sealing the victory with just seconds remaining.
Both Northern and Bemidji shot 50 percent from the floor in the game and scored 45 points in the second half. However the Wolves notched three more points off the bench, and drained 11 treys and 12 free-throws.
Warwick ultimately led the team with 24 points, while shooting 7-of-13 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the foul line.
Darin Peterka was second on the team with 12 points, and a team leading six rebounds and five assists.
Carter Evans also pulled down six rebounds, and added six points, four assists, and three steals.
Forwards
Bo Fries and
Spencer Pankonin added eight points each in the victory.
Michael Schreiber recorded six points off the bench, followed by
DJ Pollard with four and
Ian Smith with three. A total of seven Wolves shot 50 percent or over in the victory, while the team shot 54 percent in the second half.
Northern held off the attacking Beavers on defense with 15 turnovers in the game. The Wolves notched 16 points off Bemidji mistakes, however struggled on the boards as they were out-rebounded 32-25. Eight of the team's 11 3-point baskets came in the second half of play, as the Wolves improved their percentage from beyond the arc to 66.7 percent in the half.
The weekend sweep over Bemidji State and Minnesota Crookston secured the Wolves a first Round NSIC Tournament home game this Wednesday from Wachs Arena. Northern will tip-off against Southwest Minnesota State at 8 p.m. following the NSU women's game versus the Mustangs as well.
