Score SheetAberdeen, S.D. – In their final home NSIC dual of the season, the Northern State University wrestling team fell to No. 16 Minnesota State 33-6. The Wolves drop to 5-13 overall and 0-6 in Northern Sun duals.
Northern's two ranked wrestlers
Tyler Stenberg and
Joe Gomez led the Wolves with decision victories over their opponents. Just hours before the match began, Stenberg broke into the national rankings sitting No. 8 at 149 pounds, while Gomez held steady at No. 7 at 197 pounds.
Stenberg opened the match against Daniel Close with a quick 4-1 lead, tallying two takedowns in the opening period. Close added an escape in the second, and the pair traded reversals in the third however Stenberg's first period lead held strong. The junior notched a 6-4 victory and recorded the Wolves first team points of the dual.
Joe Gomez and Darick Vancura went scoreless in the opening period of competition. Gomez broke things open in the second, choosing bottom to open the period and quickly garnering an escape. He followed with a takedown and sealed the decision victory. The junior added a takedown in the third, defeating Vancura 5-1 in the match.
Next up for the Wolves is their final home dual of the 2015-16 season. Northern will face off against Dickinson State this Saturday at 7 p.m. from Wachs Arena.
