Aberdeen, S.D. – In their first home dual of the 2016-17 season, the Northern State University Wolves came away with a 26-11 victory over Concordia College. The win puts the Wolves at an even 2-2 in duals this season, as the conclude 2016.
Northern trailed 11-0 through the first three matches, falling being decision once and major decision twice. The Wolves then began their rally at 149 pounds, rattling off 26 unanswered points with three decisions, three major decisions, and one technical fall.
Tyler Stenberg kicked things off defeating Blane Tschida in a 15-8 decision. The Wolves senior tallied eight points in the first, two in the second, and five in the third including riding time to secure the victory.
Blake Perryman continued to chip away at the Cobber lead, defeating Joseph Heinz in a 16-3 major decision. Perryman jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead in the first, while adding one point on an escape in the second and two points on a reversal in the third.
With the Wolves down by four points heading into the 165 pound bout,
Sean Havlovic took things into his own hands. The senior tied things at 11-all defeating Jake Johnson in a 15-4 major decision. Havlovic notched ten points in the first, three in the second, and two off an escape and riding time in the third to secure the lead.
Tanner Olson grabbed the lead for NSU in the 174 pound match in dramatic fashion, defeating Collin Dolejs as time expired in the second period. Olson took a 4-0 lead in the first with a takedown and 2-point nearfall. He went on to expose Dolejs weakness in the second with 12 points on a reveseral, a 2-point nearfall, and two 4-point nearfalls. He capped off the win with over three minutes of riding time for his 17
th point in the match.
Northern rolled through the upper weights as
David Murphy came from behind to defeat Parker Jackson in a 5-4 decision. Jackson tallied all four points in the first, leading 4-1 as the period expired. Murphy fought back with a takedown in the second, and another in the third with just seconds remaining on the clock to seal the win.
Joe Gomez notched the team's final major decision of the evening, taking down Jacob Briggs 12-0. Gomez tallied two points in the first off a takedown, four points in the second, and six points including riding time in the third. Although the victory was sealed for NSU,
Harrison Townsend fought hard in the 285 pound match, defeating Travis Adams in a 6-1 decision. The match started slow, with neither wrestler scoring in the first. Townsend took the lead late in the second with an escape, and added on four points in nearfalls in third as Adams chose down to start the period.
Northern will return to tournament action next weekend from Indianapolis and the Midwest Classic hosted by U-Indy. Competition will run both Saturday and Sunday throughout the day.
