Leschewski Secures 1-0 Victory over Minnesota Crookston

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University soccer team rallied this afternoon to pick up a 1-0 overtime victory against the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles. Snapping a six game losing streak, the Wolves improve to 5-6-0 overall and 3-6-0 in conference play, while the Golden Eagles drop to 2-9-1 overall and 1-7-1 in the NSIC.

The Wolves maintained possession for a majority of the first half, forcing six corner kicks for a total of eight shots versus the UMC defense. Although Northern State applied pressure offensively, they came up scoreless in the first 45 minutes of action.

NSU continued to force the ball into their opponents' zone, tallying 11 additional shots in the second half. After completing regulation play, the Wolves and the Golden Eagles remained locked in at 0-0 to send the match into a ten minute overtime period.

With 39 seconds remaining in the overtime period, redshirt sophomore Darian Leschewski received a pass from Shianne Rosselli, and instantly found an opening on the right side of the pitch. Taking advantage of the breakaway, Leschewski placed the ball to the left of UMC goalkeeper, Jacqueline Burke, for her sixth goal of the season.

In the 1-0 victory, Northern State outshot Minnesota Crookston 23-8 with 10 shots on goal. Darian Leschewski led the Wolves with nine shots, four shots on goal and the game-winning goal. Anna Bondy aided the NSU offense with six shots, two of which on target for goal.

Making her first start of the 2016 season, junior goalkeeper Justine Charles completed the shutout with three saves in the net.

Northern State will continue their home stretch next weekend, taking on Concordia- St. Paul on Saturday and Minnesota State on Sunday. Both games will kick off at 1 p.m. from Jerde Field.
